Healthy Living: Turmeric

It’s been well over a year that I have heard the word “Turmeric” floating around. I remember last year having a very bad cold and bumping into a neighbor. She is a Yoga instructor and all around very healthy person. She told me to make a Turmeric tea that it would help my sore throat. I didn’t have the powder at home and thought “next time”. A few others mentioned the herb to me for whatever health reasons, but I always brushed it  off. When I was at Global Villa with my mother-in-law she told me her friend uses it on a daily basis and never ever gets sick. This particular friend has never used medication in over 30 years! That was it, I was ready to give it a try and do some investigation!

Turmeric comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant and has a tough brown skin and a deep orange flesh.

The yellow or orange pigment of turmeric, which is called curcumin. It is incredibly powerful. Here are some of the top health benefits I was able to find online:

  2. Skin & Aging
  3. Prevents Cancer
  4. Controls Diabetes
  5. Manage Depression

  9. Immunity Booster
  10. Heals Wounds
  11. Weight Management

  13. Prevents Liver Disease
  14. Improves Digestion

How do I use this golden magical powder? I mix a large teaspoon every morning in a glass of warm milk (almond, coconut or cashew) with a tablespoon of raw honey. I mix the ingredients until they are blended and drink while warm. *Both the turmeric (curcuma) powder & honey I purchase at Global Village in the Yemen pavillion.*

Apart from the above list of health benefits from turmeric powder, I like the idea of using turmeric to make a face mask!

Turmeric Face Mask (you can adjust thickness):

  • 1 Teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 Teaspoon raw honey
  • 1 Teaspoon milk or natural yoghurt

Turmeric has major anti-inflammatory properties. Yes it will help to reduce those dark circles under your eyes! If you have any of the mask leftover, simply refrigerate it and use it again (lasts a few days).

Apply the mask all over your face and let it dry. This will take roughly 20 minutes. Once the mask is dry, wash your face with cold water, followed by your daily facial cleanser and pat with a towel. OR you can just take a shower straight after. This mixture will leave color on your towel as turmeric is a natural dye. Use an older towel that you don’t mind getting dirty (and a t-shirt if you are clumsy).
