Holidays: Preparing Your Home For Summer Holidays

Many of us are en route to our home countries (or fun new destinations) in the coming days/weeks. Which means our homes will be left unattended for several weeks (or even months) subjected to extreme heat + sand + dust.

Here is how I prepare our home before leaving for the summer:

  1. Switch off all water outlets
  2. After turning off all the water outlets, run your taps until there is no longer any water dripping
  3. Strip the beds + wash the sheets and place neatly inside a cupboard so you can make the bed upon your return
  4. Sprinkle baking soda on mattresses and cover with a plastic sheet so no dust will collect on the bed
  5. Vacuum any furniture and if you wish drape with plastic or old sheets to protect from dust
  6. Place sheets of fabric softener in dresser drawers, on furniture, and in closets
  7. Turn off all outlets on walls + TV’s + unused appliances
  8. If your fridge is on the bare side, you could switch it off completely. Remove all food and wipe down the inside and disinfect. After cleaning, leave the refrigerator/freezer door slightly open to prevent any mold growth. It’s a good idea to leave a large open box of baking soda inside the refrigerator/freezer (or easier to buy those small tins found in the baking aisle here in Dubai)
  9. Wipe down your oven and unplug it or turn off the gas
  10. Same goes for the washing machine/dryer. Run a normal cycle with vinegar and disconnect.Wipe down the inside to dry it out
  11. Store your outdoor furniture/children’s toys into your garage or shed to prevent from further sun damage
  12. Make sure your garbage bins are emptied and cleaned out
  13. Clean out closets + cabinets and place dehumidifying bags or granules to prevent dampness
  14. Since we are prone to bugs in the region, sprinkle Pif Paf bug powder around areas where you usually find creepy crawlies (inside and outside). I like to line my cupboards in the kitchen with Diatomaceous earth
  15. Mow your lawn one last time if you do not have a gardener + any other little gardening tasks that need to be carried out

Just a few days before I return from holidays with the kids, I get a cleaner to come in to do a deep clean. I will have them remove the plastic sheets and make the beds (because I probably will not be in the mood after doing a 13 hour flight with two kids). And voila! The house will be back to normal!
